The Easter Escape: Unlocking the Quiet Magic of Manly Beach
It’s the Easter Long Weekend in Sydney. Usually, this means a mass exodus as families clog the highways heading north or south. But for those of us who stay behind, a rare magic settles over the city. The roads go quiet, the frantic pace of the CBD exhales, and suddenly, that “quick zip” across the Sydney Harbour Bridge is actually a reality.
For the first edition of Local Secrets, we’re heading across the Spit Bridge and up the hill to the gateway of the Northern Beaches. Our destination? A coastal sanctuary tucked away from the holiday hustle: Peppers Manly Beach.
First Impressions: Airy, Easy, and Eco-Conscious
We took the scenic route, driving down from North Steyne with the raging Pacific surf on our left, tracking the shoreline until the road ends at the southern tip of the beach. Here, hidden in plain sight, sits Peppers Hotel.
The lobby immediately sets the tone. A warm, earthy colour palette that complements the open, airy architecture of the coast. But it’s the small, thoughtful details that signalled this wasn’t just a standard hotel stay.
The staff were wonderful, the kind of genuine “happy to see you” energy making you feel like you’re arriving at a friend’s beach house.
Check-in was efficient and they provide eco-friendly room keys – a first I had seen and a welcomed sign of the times.
Another win for the environment, a water filling station in the lobby, offering both Still and Sparkling water.
The Room: A Front Row Seat to South Steyne
Walking into the Classic Studio with Ocean View, you’re immediately drawn toward the floor-to-ceiling glass doors. The layout features a clever sunken lounge room leading you out to a private balcony.
From the 4th floor, we were met with a stunning 180-degree view of South Steyne. It’s the kind of view that makes you stop and just breathe.
The room is perfectly sized for a couple, featuring crisp linen, eclectic décor that’s a little dated, and a kitchenette with a full fridge to keep the beer cold.
Local Secret Eats
Manly’s food scene is as eclectic as the hotel furniture, but if you know where to go there’s some food lover finds, which is what Local Secrets is here to share
During this stay, we ventured to two spots that define the “Local Secrets” vibe.
Tucked away from the main tourist drag of the Corso, Whistler Street Pizza is where the locals go when they want authentic, wood-fired perfection.
- The vibe is relaxed, buzzing, and unpretentious.
- The crust is that perfect thin-and-crispy hybrid. Whether you’re grabbing a classic Margherita or something more adventurous, you can taste the quality of the ingredients. It’s the ultimate “post-beach” reward.
Just a short trip over the headland brings you to Pilu at Freshwater and the must try Sardinian flavours.
- Overlooking the much-loved Freshwater Beach, this isn’t just a meal; it’s an experience, with service as polished as the glassware.
- Their signature suckling pig is legendary, but it’s the way they celebrate the seafood with Italian soul that made the meal standout for us. A wonderful “Long Weekend” treat.
Local Secrets Review
As much as we enjoyed our time at Peppers Manly Beach. The location being the biggest appeal – there are a few things to call out, so you’re not caught out.
- There is no on-site kitchen, so no room service. They do offer a curated list of local partners who offer discounts to Peppers guests.
- Parking is an extra cost and is not guaranteed. We were lucky to get a spot but be warned it has a very steep driveway and tight carpark.
